Indiana County’s ATHENA and Young ATHENA award recipients were honored yesterday at the 2023 Emerging Women Leaders luncheon held at the Indiana Country Club.
The ATHENA award recipient was Dr. Sue Reig of Indiana, an IUP Professor Emerita currently serving on the Indiana School Board. She has served in the education field for 41 years, as an elementary teacher, instructional support teacher and elementary principal. She was a faculty member and chair of the Professional Studies in Education Department at IUP before she was named interim dean of the College of Education and Communications.
The ATHENA Young Professional award went to Trista Long, the proprietor of Green Fire CrossFit. On top of her work as a certified coach focusing on trauma and athlete-informed approaches, she is the host of a podcast that focuses on mental health and wellness issues. She also founded the non-profit organization Gym Therapy, Inc., through which she organized many events to serve many different organizations.
Also announced at yesterday’s event was the first ever Spadafora Family ATHENA Scholarship recipient, Rebekah Gutierrez. The Marion Center student is active in the district’s ATHENA club and is president of her Senior Class, and is part of several clubs. She plans to attend IUP to study Spanish and Spanish education. The $5000 scholarship is established to honor the late Chuck Spadafora, owner of Colonial Motor Mart who started the ATHENA awards program in Indiana County.
