The Penguins did not bring a lot of energy with them to St. Louis last night, falling to the Blues 4-2. The Blues were led by Gibsonia’s Brandon Saad, who scored his first two goals of the season.
Saad scored his first goal in the first period when the Penguins’ Bryan Rust collided with goaltender Tristan Jarry on a scramble in front of the net. The puck slid to Saad, who slipped it into the vacant goal.
The Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin scored hos fourth goal of the season on a breakaway as he exited the penalty box at 19:55 of the period, beating Blues’ goalie Jordan Binnington to the stick side with a wicked wrist shot.
The Blues scored the next three goals, by Jake Neighbours and Alexei Toropchenko in the second period, and by Saad in the third, before the Penguins’ Radim Zohorna, playing his first game of the season, scored on a rebound at 16:27 of the third.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said the Penguins didn’t play hard enough or smart enough to win the game and they “got what (they) deserved.”
The Pens host the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.
