State Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman has sent a letter to his counterpart in the State House concerning moving the 2024 primary election date.
Both chambers agreed to move next year’s spring primary to avoid it falling in the middle of the Jewish holiday of Passover, but the Senate wished to move the primary to March 19th. That passed by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 45-2 on September 20th. But the State House last week approved its own proposal of moving the Primary to April 2nd. The House bill also rejected an effort to implement expanded Voter ID requirements, mail ballot rule changes and other provisions.
In his letter to House Majority Leader Matthew Bradford, Pittman said that the Senate considers the matter closed and the only option on the table is to revert to the Senate’s bill and forward it to Governor Josh Shapiro for his signature. He said that given concerns that were voiced by schools, churches and others, they need to move quickly to either send the bill to the Governor’s desk or close the discussion.
