The Penguins travel to Washington tonight to take on the Capitals. It’s the 66th renewal of the Sidney Crosby/Alexander Ovechkin rivalry. Crosby has a 38-23-4 all-time regular season record against Ovechkin and has won 13 of the 25 times they’ve been opposite each other in the playoffs. For their careers, the long-time friends and rivals are razor-close in points. Despite playing 156 fewer career games than Ovechkin, Crosby leads him in points, 1,503 to 1,485.
With the hype around Crosby and Ovechkin, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan is more concerned with getting his team to play the way they need to play to win.
Crosby says when he and Ovechkin get together on the ice, it’s always special and always competitive.
New Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson will get his first taste of the intense rivalry between the Capitals and Pens, and he’s looking forward to it.
Tonight’s game will be the Penguins’ second, after an opening night loss to the Blackhawks on Tuesday. For the Capitals, it’s their season opener.
