The company behind a new biodigester facility that is going in to the Route 119 Business Park in Center Township does have some environmental violations on its record.
Most recently in November of 2017, Air Liquide Advanced Technologies paid out an environmental penalty of $36,608 for the company’s facility in Woburn, Massachusetts. Details on the exact violations are not available. The parent company also has been assessed over $14 million in environmental-related penalties since 2000, with many of those incidents rectified since the infractions were made.
We talked with Byron Stauffer of the Office of Planning and Development, who said that the company was properly vetted, and by purchasing the land at the Route 119 business park, they have to follow some very strict rules. He said the project is being done in accordance with an air quality permit from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and that there are some strict rules connected with the deed to the property.
The plant will receive dairy waste from 18-20 farms and use that waste to produce biogas that will be injected into Peoples Natural Gas’ pipeline system for residential and commercial use. Work on the site continues, and the site is expected to open in the second quarter of 2024.
