A state representative from the Philadelphia area is proposing legislation that would phase out gasoline-powered lawn mowers and garden equipment.
Melissa Shusterman, a Democrat from Chester County, wants to create a Zero Emissions Lawn Care Task Force to “develop a plan to phase out gas-powered lawn and garden equipment in Pennsylvania.” Her bill would also establish an incentive program to encourage state residents to switch to battery-powered mowers and trimmers, and would explore the affordability of helping residents of disadvantaged communities make the switch.
Shusterman says more than a hundred communities in the U.S. have at least a partial ban on gas-powered mowers and other states are also considering it.
