The Miami Marlins clinched a wild-card berth at the expense of the Pirates, defeating the Bucs, 7-3, in the next-to-last game of the season for Pittsburgh. The loss came on the 51st anniversary of Roberto Clemente’s 3,000th and final hit of his Hall of Fame career.
Endy Rodriguez and Bryan Reynolds each hit an RBI single for the Pirates, who at 75-86 will try to finish the season today with a victory.
Pittsburgh starter Quinn Priester (3-3) allowed four runs and 10 hits against the Marlins in 5 1/3 innings.
The Pirates have not yet announced a starting pitcher for today’s season finale. Airtime on WCCS is 2:05 with the Ben Cherington Show.
The Pirates announced team honors Saturday, with Ke’Bryan Hayes winning the Roberto Clemente Award as the Pirates’ MVP and Keller the Steve Blass Award as their best pitcher, as voted by members of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Designated hitter Andrew McCutchen was voted winner of the Chuck Tanner Award for media cooperation.
The Pirates also announced Saturday that PiratesFest will return in 2024. The fan-oriented offseason event will return after a three-year hiatus on Jan. 6 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. PiratesFest will be open to the general public from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with season ticket holders having access in a one-hour window prior to the start.
