Senate Republican leadership, including Senator Joe Pittman, have issued a statement after Governor Shapiro’s administration failed to request the statutorily required amount be deposited in the state’s Rainy Day Fund.
In a joint statement from Pittman, Senate President Pro Tempore Kim Ward and Appropriations Committee Chairman Scott Martin, the Governor has only transferred less than half of the $900 million that is mandated to go to the rainy day fund, which can be used in times of economic downturn. They say “There is only one reason why the Shapiro Administration wants to avoid following the law and having the required payments to the Rainy Day Fund made – because they want to be able to spend more taxpayer dollars in future years. It is deeply troubling Governor Shapiro keeps trying to change the rules every time he doesn’t get what he wants.”
They added, that this defies prior precedent from past governors from both parties, and they will explore all options to make sure that the law is followed.
