The Steelers opened practice yesterday for Sunday’s game at Houston, and three of the five starters on the offensive line sat out. The two starters on the right side, guard James Daniels and Chuks Okorafor, were sidelined with injuries and left guard Isaac Seumalo was given the day off for rest.
Punter Pressley Harvin, defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, wide receiver Allen Robinson, and tight end/fullback Connor Heyward were all out with injuries and cornerback Patrick Peterson had the day off.
Safety Miles Killebrew was limited and wide receiver/kick returner Gunner Olszewski returned to full practice after sitting out a week with concussion symptoms.
The Texans are coached by former 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, and the similarities between Houston’s and San Francisco’s defenses are obvious. The Steelers were stymied by the Niners in the first week of the season.
Quarterback Kenny Pickett says the Texans and Niners basically run the same defenses.
Tight end Pat Freiermuth says the Texans will try to deny the middle of the field, so the Steelers’ receivers will have to adapt.
Running back Najee Harris says NFL defenses (like the Raiders last week) imitate each other when they see that a scheme works, so the Steelers will have to have both the running and passing games working.
The Packers and Lions square off in Green Bay tonight in an NFC North battle to kick off the fourth week of the season.
