GOLF
At Scotch Valley Country Club in Hollidaysburg yesterday, West Shamokin’s sensational sophomore Alex Talmadge won the District 6 Double-A championship, firing a one-under par 71 to beat Central Martinsburg’s Griffin Snowberger by four strokes. Talmadge is one of three Heritage Conference golfers to make it to the state tournament. River Valley’s Jake Pynos shot a 78 and finished fifth. Northern Cambria’s Brady Houser shot 79 and finished in a three-way tie for sixth. The top eight golfers make the state tournament, which is October 16th and 17th at the Penn State White Course.
Central Martinsburg won the team tournament to advance to the states. St. Joseph’s Academy was second and West Shamokin third, six strokes off the pace.
VOLLEYBALL
Portage came up with a big win over Homer-Center last night, 3-2. The Mustangs won the first two games, 25-16 and 25-22, but the Wildcats stormed back with wins of 25-16 and 25-22 before dropping the final set, 15-4. Meegan Williams led Homer-Center with 22 kills and 16 digs, Ashlyn Kerr had 12 kills and 15 digs, Alaina Fabin had 11 kills and Hannah Arone had 25 assists.
SOCCER
A second win in two days for United, which beat Ligonier Valley, 3-2 yesterday after falling behind, 2-1 in the second half. Gideon Bracken scored for the Lions in the first half, and he tied the game with his second goal in the second half. Garin Fischer scored the game-winner. Assists on the three goals were recorded by Dakota Hood, goalkeeper Jackson Wirick, and Brad Kiesel. Wirick made 16 saves.
Hampton beat Indiana, 5-0.
