Mike Sullivan, Kyle Dubas, and the rest of the Penguins’ staff today begin the process of sorting through the stars, veterans, and prospects to fashion a roster for the regular season. After the players reported yesterday, the first training camp workouts begin today at 9 AM on both rinks at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.
While the playing roster is being decided, the Penguins ownership group has finally settled its broadcasting roster. Yesterday, SportsNet Pittsburgh, the new television home of the Pens, named Phil Bourque an in-game color analyst, Colby Armstrong and Mike Rupp as in-game and studio analysts, and Jay Caufield as studio analyst. Those are largely the roles all have played in the past on Penguins broadcasts, but Bourque will evidently get more TV work after serving as the primary color analyst for radio for the last 19 years.
All four of the analysts are former Penguins players. Armstrong and Rupp also have roles on national network coverage.
Josh Getzoff and Steve Mears will switch play-by-play roles this year, with Getzoff moving to TV and Mears to radio.
