One person was killed in an accident Friday morning at a limestone quarry in Avonmore.
Indiana County 911 dispatched Iselin/West Lebanon, Saltsburg, Coal Run, and Elderton firefighters and Lifestat EMS to the Ridge Limestone Quarry for a physical rescue call around 10:27. State police from the Troop A barracks and the county coroner’s office were called in shortly after to assist.
Iselin/West Lebanon fire chief Brian Schirato said a man between 30 and 40 years old was trapped inside a limestone hopper and was unable to escape. He was among the first group of firefighters to reach the hopper and he described what measures they took to try and save the person’s life.
Schirato said there were a lot of factors to consider before taking any action.
State police Public Information Officer Trooper Cliff Greenfield said law enforcement officials believe this death was accidental and no additional injuries were reported.
An investigation into the accident is on-going and more information is expected to be released on Saturday. You can watch interview’s with Greenfield and Schirato below:
