Andrew McCutchen’s season is over after he partially tore his left Achilles tendon in Tuesday night’s game. Cutch will wear a walking boot for the next six weeks. He says he wants to come back and play for the Pirates next season and get his 300th career home run. He’s on a one-year contract in his second stint with the Bucs and says he has to make the right decisions for himself and his family, but it wouldn’t “feel right” to get number 300 anywhere else but Pittsburgh. Jared Triolo was recalled from Indianapolis to take McCutchen’s spot on the roster.
The Chicago White Sox claimed pitcher Yohan Ramirez, who was designated for assignment by the Pirates last week. Outfielder Cal Mitchell cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Indianapolis.
Outfielder/catcher Henry Davis has been hitting and catching in recent days, according to director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. He says Davis will next increase his reps to see how his injured hand responds.
Shortstop Oneil Cruz restarted his running program on Monday and so far, so good. Tomczyk says the Pirates are experimenting with different types of orthotics and prep techniques with Cruz to find out what feels best as he works to return from his fractured ankle.
Tomczyk said infielder Tucapito Marcano rode a stationary bike on Tuesday and is walking normally after having had surgery for a torn ACL on August 9th. Full recovery is estimated at 9 to 12 months.
