Steelers coach Mike Tomlin held his weekly in-season news conference yesterday as the team continued preparation for Sunday’s season opener against the 49ers. Tomlin said a couple of players were ”somewhat limited” in Monday’s first practice of the week but he expects everyone on the roster to be healthy and available on Sunday.
The coach said he was very happy with the attitudes of his players as they have prepared for the season. He says that while a lot of factors will determine who wins on Sunday, not the least of which is the opponent, ultimately it comes down to the Steelers doing what they need to do to win.
Tomlin says the challenge for his defense will be handling all of the 49ers stars, whom he called “space winners”, meaning they usually do well in the open field. It starts with running back Christian McCaffrey, who is a threat running and catching the ball.
Tomlin said he is preparing as if contract holdout Nick Bosa will play for San Francisco, and he’s also anticipating tight end George Kittle will play for the 49ers. Kittle has a groin injury. The official injury list for the weekend is due today.
