Steelers players reported to the South Side yesterday after four days off, focusing on Sunday’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, and with the team still unsettled in the defensive backfield.
On his first day in uniform, newly-signed former All-Pro Desmond King said he would be ready to go on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium. The cornerback said he could end up playing outside, in the slot, or even at safety.
Wherever he is called upon to play, King says he is thrilled to be in Pittsburgh, which plays the way he likes to play.
One of the biggest storylines of the game on Sunday is the status of the 49ers’ Nick Bosa, the three-time All-Pro and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who is holding out while seeking a contract that exceeds that of Steelers linebacker TJ Watt. Bosa missed all of training camp and was not on the field yesterday for the first practice of the week.
Bosa or not, Steelers center Mason Cole says they are still trying to figure out the defensive approach of the 49ers, who have new leadership on the defensive side of the ball.
The Steelers players yesterday elected their captains for the season, choosing defensive stalwarts Cam Heyward and TJ Watt, quarterback Kenny Pickett, and special teams ace Miles Killebrew.
