The Pirates had a chance to sweep through Missouri, but their five-game winning streak came to an end yesterday in St. Louis. Here’s Joe Block.
Manager Derek Shelton was happy with the way the Pirates played, even in a loss.
Shelton likes what he’s seen of Miguel Andujar since his return from Indianapolis.
Infielder Liover Peguero says the Pirates are putting together a nice run as the season winds down.
Coming off a complete game two-hit shutout in his last outing, Pirates starter Johan Oviedo struggled with his command, throwing 49 balls and only 48 strikes before being taken out of the game in the fourth inning. He said he couldn’t get comfortable on the mound in St. Louis and said that’s happened “a lot” this season, but he did not specify what the problem was.
The Pirates return home for a brief three-game series with Milwaukee starting tonight. Former Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes pitches for the Brewers. The Pirates have not announced a starter. Because it’s September and kids are back in school, night games at PNC Park for the rest of the season will begin at 6:35, with the pregame airing on WCCS at 6:10.
ALTOONA CURVE
Aaron Shortridge had a spectacular month of August, with a 5-0 record and a 1.91 ERA. His September got off to a terrible start, though, as he gave up 13 runs, 12 earned yesterday in two-and-two-thirds innings. The Curve lost to Erie 13-5. Tsung-Che Cheng hit two home runs for the Curve and Eli Wilson had two hits, including a home run.
The Curve are off today and open their final series of the season tomorrow night at home against Harrisburg.
