The Pitt Panthers easily handled Wofford, 45-7, in their season opener yesterday while Penn State dispatched West Virginia, 38-15. Phil Jurkovec’s first start at quarterback for Pitt was cut to only three quarters of action as the game got out of hand. Jurkovec, the Notre Dame and Boston College transfer from Pine Richland High School, threw for 214 yards, completing 17 of 23 passes and tossing one touchdown.
Pitt’s next opponent will be much tougher. The Panthers will play Cincinnati next Saturday night at Acrisure Stadium.
Playing West Virginia for the first time since 1992, Penn State crushed the Mountaineers as new quarterback Drew Allar threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns.
The Nittany Lions play Delaware next Saturday.
