The Steelers yesterday got down to the 53-man roster limit, but this probably won’t be the final roster as they head to the season opener on September 10th against the 49ers. One expected move is to settle on a punter. They kept two yesterday, incumbent Pressley Harvin III and former New York Jet Braden Mann. One of them could be trade bait for another team.
Players released by their NFL teams can be claimed off waivers starting today, and the 16-man practice squads can also be set. With the exception of cornerback Corey Trice Jr., who will spend the season on injured reserve, the Steelers kept all six of their draft picks.
Before making their cuts, the Steelers traded guard/center Kendrick Green to Houston for a 2025 sixth round draft pick. Veteran Steelers who did not make the cut included tight end Zach Gentry and safety Tre Norwood. Other cuts were running backs Greg Bell and Xazavian Valladay, wide receivers Jordan Boyd and Dez Fitzpatrick, tight end Rodney Williams, offensive lineman Ryan McCollum, linebackers Nick Kwiatkwoski, David Perales, and Quincy Roche, cornerbacks Luq Barcoo and Chris Wilcox, safety Trenton Thompson, and defensive linemen Breiden Fehoko and Jonathan Marshall.
One very happy new Steeler is their second round draft pick, defensive lineman Keeanu Benton, another of the “Wisconsin connection” players who says he believes he has shown he’s an NFL player.
Two former Steelers first round draft choices made the rosters of their new teams…Terrell Edmunds is on the final 53-man list for the Eagles and Devin Bush made the Seahawks’ roster, although multiple reports say he might not make it to week one.
