With his team returning after two non-consecutive off days to start the week, Coach Mike Tomlin welcomed the Steelers back to Latrobe with a few new drills in an effort to make things more “competitive.”
Tomlin added two new drills to the mix: 7-Shots and Move the Ball. The first allowed the offense seven opportunities to find the endzone and they did so in three trys. The latter saw the ball placed at the 30-yard line with no time and the offense had to nab a first down to maintain possession.
Overall, Tomlin was pleased with how practice went and he said it’s good to “shake things up” whenever they can.
Tomlin also talked about the influence Nick Herbig has on the offensive line, including first-round pick Broderick Jones.
Jones met with the media after practice to talk about his first NFL game and he said the speed is similar to what he experienced at Georgia.
Jones adds there’s always more to learn at the professional level.
Tomlin had little to say regarding the slew of injuries on the team. He said the team is “getting more participation” from defensive lineman Keeanu Benton, cornerback Joey Porter Jr., and safeties Damontae Kazee and Keanu Neal. And defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi is “moving closer” to returning.
The Steelers also waived former Penn State running back John Lovett after he suffered an injury in camp. In his place, the team signed Xazavian Valladay. He was signed by Houston as an undrafted free agent but was released during training camp.
