The Steelers have lost cornerback Cory Trice Jr. for the season after the rookie seventh round draft choice suffered what coach Mike Tomlin called a “significant injury” to his right knee. Trice was placed on injured reserve yesterday ending his season.
The team signed two defensive backs yesterday, safety Trenton Thompson and cornerback Isaiah Dunn. Thompson spent last year on the Giants’ practice squad while Dunn played for the Jets in 2021 and Seahawks last season. Running back Alfonzo Graham was waived/injured with a torn labrum in his shoulder.
The injury report included defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal, with an ankle injury that Tomlin said was “minor” despite looking pretty serious at first. The expected starting safeties both missed practice…Damontae Kazee has an ankle injury and Minkah Fitzpatrick remains away from the team on an excused absence for personal reasons. Another safety, Keanu Neal and wide receiver Diontae Johnson are being monitored for minor injuries, according to Tomlin.
After a second straight day of practice in pads, Tomlin says the team is forming everyday habits that are important to their development.
Tomlin says his restocked offensive line is sorting itself out, with guys trying to earn a spot on the team.
Linebacker TJ Watt’s injury-plagued 2022 season has apparently cost him some prestige in the eyes of his fellow NFL players. Watt fell from the number six ranked player in the NFL to 27th in the annual top 100 ratings. Cam Heyward is ranked 45th. Minkah Fitzpatrick will be ranked as well, but where remains to be seen.
