The Steelers not only officially announced the signing of linebacker Kwon Alexander yesterday, they had him on the practice field at St. Vincent. The nine-year veteran played last year for the Jets. His addition to the roster makes yet another veteran newcomer in what is becoming a crowded room, with new additions Cole Holcomb, Elandon Roberts, Nick Kwiatkoski, and Tanner Muse.
Coach Mike Tomlin likes the idea of having the NFL vets battling for playing time.
Tomlin gave some of his veterans the day off yesterday, including Cam Heyward, TJ Watt and others. He said it gave him a chance to evaluate the play of some young prospects.
In a training camp surprise, fullback Monte “The Mullet” Pottebaum quit football yesterday and was placed on the reserve/retired list. The rookie free agent from Iowa grew up a Steelers fan and had said he was ready to do whatever was asked of him to make the team, but he walked away after only three days of practice. Tomlin said the team has not decided whether or not it will fill the roster spot.
Steelers players have the day off today.
