The Pirates ended their season series with the Padres taking five out of six games, with a little bit of tension in yesterday’s series finale in San Diego. here’s Joe Block:
The Pirates played without manager Derek Shelton and relief pitcher Angel Perdomo, who were both suspended by Major League Baseball yesterday for Perdomo hitting the Padres’ Manny Machado with a pitch on Tuesday night. The teams’ bad moods continued in yesterday’s game after the Bucs’ starter Johan Oviedo hit Xander Bogaerts with a pitch. In the 8th inning, Jack Suwinski got drilled by Padres reliever Nick Martinez, and in the bottom of the 9th, Bednar hit San Diego’s Jake Cronenworth on the foot. The Pirates also had to survive Oviedo’s wild first inning, when he was called for three pitch clock violations and threw a wild pitch over the head of Fernando Tatis Jr.
The Pirates are off today. They open a three-game series with the Phillies at PNC Park tomorrow night.
