The Pirates broke out the offense last night as they opened their series with San Diego. Joe Block has the recap.
The Pirates lost infielder Tucupita Marcano in the fifth inning when he injured his right knee as he came down awkwardly on third base while trying to avoid a tag. It was described as a ligament injury, with tests scheduled today.
Pirates left-hander Rich Hill [7-9, 4.84 ERA] faces Padres’ righty Blake Snell [6-8. 2.67 ERA] in tonight’s second game of the series. It will be a 9:15 airtime, 9:40 first pitch on WCCS.
MLB Insider Jon Heyman said yesterday that the Pirates are listening to offers for All-Star closer David Bednar, but said the Pittsburgh native would be “difficult to move” prior to next Tuesday’s trade deadline. Heyman said the Bucs are also open to an offer for All-Star Mitch Keller but in both cases he says trades “would seem like a pretty low probability to happen in either case” but adds it “makes sense to listen.”
With talent from the draft flowing into the Pirates organization and rosters in flux throughout their minor league system, the team has released infielder Drew Maggi, who’d been on the Altoona roster but has not played much baseball this season. In 36 games Maggi hit .181 before being placed on the development list on July 14th. He made a memorable Major League debut this year with the Pirates after thirteen years in the minors, collecting his first MLB hit on April 29th against the Nationals.
ALTOONA CURVE
After splitting six games with Reading, Altoona hits the road for six against Harrisburg starting tonight. The Curve will send right-hander Aaron Shortridge to the mound to open the series.
