Just two days before the Steelers report to St. Vincent College for the start of training camp and while the news has been very positive through the spring, there is one nagging concern still not resolved: cornerback Joey Porter Jr. still is not signed to a contract.
Meanwhile, his future teammates are scheduled to hold their first workout on Thursday, and the training staff will be on full alert, with temperatures forecast in the upper eighties, and with high humidity.
Porter, the rookie from Penn State who grew up in Pittsburgh, was rated a first round talent but was taken with the first pick in the second round and he participated in all of the formal spring workouts, including rookie camp, OTAs, and mandatory minicamp. He even took snaps with the first team defense. But without a contract, Porter cannot practice or even report to training camp.
The Browns and Jets, who will be playing in the Hall of Fame Game on August 3rd, reported to camp last week and the defending champion Chiefs reported on Saturday. (Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney suffered a knee injury while catching punts before the first official workout.) Most of the rest of the NFL’s teams will report tomorrow. The Steelers will be the last of team to report to camp.
