Penguins President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas continued his busy offseason on Friday by reaching agreements with two players.
2023 third-round pick Emil Pieniniemi signed a three-year, entry level contract, marking the first member of this year’s draft class to sign with the Penguins. The 6-2, 176-pound Finnish defenseman recently took part in the Penguins’ development camp and spent most of last year in Finland’s under-18 and under-20 leagues. He also played one game with Finland’s top professional league, Karpat of Liiga, last season.
Dubas also re-signed forward Jonathan Gruden to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000. The 23-year-old appeared in 54 games with AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre Scranton last year and made his NHL debut January 16 against Anaheim. With Wilkes-Barre Scranton, he posted career-highs in goals (16) and points (31).
Gruden was acquired by Pittsburgh in the Matt Murray trade in 2020.
