The PIAA this week instituted a new rule for high school basketball, eliminating the one-and-one shot after seven team fouls in a half and making it a two-shot foul after five team fouls in each quarter, with the team fouls resetting to zero after each quarter. The rules align with the newly adopted regulations recommended by the National Federation of High Schools.
On Indiana In the Morning on WCCS, Todd Marino asked United boys basketball coach Matt Rodkey how the rules might affect the game. Rodkey says the rules will enable his team to play more aggressive defense, with the possibility of sixteen fouls per game and the opposition getting no free throws from them.
Rodkey serves as scorekeeper for IUP basketball’s games at the KCAC and he says the new rules are the same as the women’s NCAA rules.
The PIAA did not adopt the NFHS’s recommendation that high school basketball institute the shot clock.
