The Waste Management landfill in Indiana County will end operations next year.
The company announced that the Evergreen Landfill will close in the first half of 2024. With the closure, Waste Management will consolidate hauling operations in the region with a new facility being built in Jackson Township in Cambria County, meaning the Homer City office will close as well and 55 jobs will leave the county. Waste Management came to Center Township in 1995 after purchasing Pellegrene Sanitation from Joe Pellegrene.
The landfill runs from Center Township into Brush Valley Township. The Central Indiana County Joint Sanitary Authority has taken the leachate discharge from the landfill. Executive Director Peggy Citeroni said that while it will affect their budget, it will not be an immediate effect.
Center Township Supervisor Jim Gatskie said the township will see a negative financial hit from the closure.
All employees out of Indiana County have been offered the opportunity for relocation. Waste Management customers will not see any changes in service, and do not need to take any additional actions.
