One of Pitt’s greatest athletes will be honored in Pittsburgh this weekend.
According to an announcement on the university’s athletics website, Saturday will be declared Sam Clancy Day, honoring the influential basketball star from 1978-81. Clancy, a Pittsburgh native, was a four-year starter at Pitt and is the only player in school history to score more than 1,000 points and nab 1,000 rebounds in his career.
Clancy also won gold with the U.S. during the 1979 Pan American Games. He was elected to the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame and the Pitt All-Centennial Men’s Basketball Team.
Clancy was drafted to the NFL in 1982 despite never playing college football and spent 12 years in pro football both in the NFL and USFL. He was also drafted to the Phoenix Suns in 1981.
A street sign honoring Clancy will go at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Roberts Street and a ceremony will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
