Looking to crawl back into third place in the NL Central, the Pirates dropped the series finale against the Chicago Cubs, 8-3, Wednesday afternoon and extended their losing streak to nine.
Greg Brown has the recap.
The Pirates start a four-game series in Miami tonight. Mitch Keller starts for the Bucs. He’s 8-3 with a 3.62 ERA. Lefty Braxton Garrett (3-2, 3.88 ERA) goes for the Marlins. 6:15 airtime on WCCS.
Pitcher Rich Hill said he knows the Pirates are better than what scores have recently shown.
Pirates Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk had some encouraging news on first baseman Ji Man Choi during his weekly update. He said Choi will likely begin a rehab assignment soon as he recovers from a strained left Achilles. Choi has been on the IL since April 15.
Shortstop Oneil Cruz is doing light throwing drills but is dealing with “residual soreness” stemming from a broken ankle that he suffered on April 10. RHP Wil Crowe, who has dealt with right shoulder discomfort, has experienced “no symptoms” after throwing two bullpen sessions, and is expected to throw live bullpens next week.
Tomczyk adds Bryan Reynolds took batting practice on Wednesday as he deals with soreness in his back, and he will be assessed in the coming days. Andrew McCutchen, who has been out of action over the past couple of days with right elbow soreness, is “improving every day,” according to Tomczyk.
The Pirates will also unveil their City Connect jerseys later today.
