After their first 28 games, the Pirates had the best record in baseball, twelve games over .500. Twenty-eight games later, they are below .500 after getting hammered yesterday in San Francisco. Joe Block has the story.
The Pirates try to get back to .500 tonight against the Giants. The Bucs will throw right-hander Johan Oviedo [3-4, 4.70 ERA] against Giants’ righty John Brebbia [2-0, 3.68 ERA] It’s a 9:20 airtime, 9:45 first pitch from San Francisco on WCCS.
Jack Suwinski’s two homers both splashed into McCovey Cove, making him the only player besides Barry Bonds to hit two into the water in San Francisco in a single game. Bonds did it twice.
First baseman Carlos Santana did not play yesterday after exiting Sunday’s game in Seattle with lower back stiffness. He was scheduled off Monday anyway, and said he is feeling much better and expects to be back in the lineup without a trip to the injured list.
ALTOONA CURVE
For the only time this season, the Curve are in the midst of a twelve-game homestand. After taking four out of six from Hartford, they open a six-game set tonight against Binghampton. Aaron Shortridge starts the game for Altoona.
The Curve are 22-21, a game behind Erie in the Eastern League’s Southwest Division with four weeks to go in the first half of the season.
