The Pirates scraped their way back into yesterday’s series finale in Seattle, but couldn’t get the job done in extra innings. Here’s Greg Brown.
In each of their last three series, the Pirates have won the first game and lost the next two. Today, the Bucs move on to another West Coast city, taking on a team that’s won six of their last eight games. The Bucs send lefty Rich Hill [4-4, 4.27 ERA] to the mound against the Giants’ Anthony DeSclafani [3-4, 3.43 ERA]. It’s a 4:40 airtime, 5:05 first pitch from San Francisco on WCCS.
Just one day after returning to the rotation after suffering elbow pain on May 4th, Vince Velasquez landed back on the 15-day IL with more discomfort in the elbow. Velasquez got cuffed around in only two innings of work on Saturday in Seattle, giving up four runs on seven hits with a walk. Right-handed reliever Cody Bolton was recalled from Indianapolis. The Bucs search for solid work out of the bullpen continues. After they designated Chase De Jong for assignment and optioned him back to Indy, on Saturday they DFA’d Duane Underwood Jr. And starter Roansy Contreras pitched out of the bullpen yesterday.
First baseman Carlos Santana left yesterday’s game with “lumbar spine muscular tightness” after batting in the 6th inning. The Pirates say he is day to day.
