PIAA TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Homer-Center’s Justley Sharp defended her state title in discus at the PIAA Track and Field Championships on Friday. Sharp threw a personal-best 148’ 6” to overtake Richland’s Sasha Garnett (126’ 7”) and Mount Pleasant’s Tiffany Zelmore (123’ 4”) to claim the 2A crown.
River Valley’s Sara McConnell also shined by placing third in the 2A girls high jump with a 5-4 mark. McConnell fell just shy of Neshannock’s Ava Koski and Northewestern Lehigh’s Faith Yost, who both finished with a 5-5 mark.
Other notable performances on Friday include Conemaugh Township’s Jackson Sotosky, who placed fifth in the boys 2A long jump; and Indiana’s Charlie Weber, who took ninth in the pole vault.
Events continue today on the track.
BASEBALL
Portage bowed out of the PIAA Class 1A baseball playoffs with a 2-1 loss to top seed Harmony. Sophomore Jake McCoy fanned 14 hitters while Isaac Jubina collected three hits, including a triple.
Several Indiana High baseball players earned WPIAL All-Section honors for Section 4A4. Gavin Homer, Ben Ryan and Steven Budash earned first team honors, while pitcher Ryan Okopal was named to the second team. Trevor Smith, Nick Love and Michael Tortorella received honorable mentions.
Indiana takes on Montour in the 4A consolation game Wednesday.
