The Pirates struggled at the plate last night and the pitching wasn’t up to par either as they dropped their game against the Texas Rangers. Joe Block reports.
The Pirates again fell victim to a number of mistakes in the field, on the mound, and on the basepaths. Rich Hill committed a balk to allow a run to score, reliever Jose Hernandez balked in another run, and Ji Hwan Bae got picked off twice, once at first base by the pitcher, and once at second by the right fielder after Bae got caught between second and third on Andrew McCutchen’s single.
The series concludes this afternoon. Right-hander Johan Oviedo [3-3, 4.69 ERA] pitches for the Bucs against the Rangers’ lefty Martin Perez [5-1, 4.01 ERA]. It’s a 12:10 airtime, 12:35 first pitch on WCCS.
In Pirates injury news, first baseman Ji Man Choi has begun taking grounders and hitting in the batting cage. He’s been out since April 13th with an Achilles injury.
ALTOONA CURVE
A six-run eighth inning wiped out a 3-0 deficit and propelled Altoona to a 6-3 win over Hartford at PNG Field. The rally started with a leadoff walk to Mason Martin followed by a two-run homer by Jacob Gonzalez. The Curve then loaded the bases with just one hit before Connor Scott lined a three-run triple down the right field line. Scott then scored on a sac fly by Fabricio Macias. Scott had a double and a triple on the night. He and Matt Fraizer each had two hits.
Aaron Shortridge pitches for the Curve later this morning in the final Education Day game, with first pitch scheduled for 11 AM.
