Mitch Keller was the stopper again for the Pirates yesterday in another dominant performance by the Bucs’ ace. Greg Brown has the story.
With two straight shutout performances covering 16 consecutive scoreless innings, Keller says he and catcher Austin Hedges had a solid approach.
Keller says he wasn’t tracking his strikeout rate.
Keller was surprised when he got a glimpse of the stat board.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was in awe of Keller’s performance.
Pirates’ general manager Ben Cherington is resisting the temptation to rush his two best prospects, catchers Endy Rodriguez and Henry Davis, to the majors. He said on The Ben Cherington Show on WCCS yesterday that he’d rather see more of the two catching regularly in the minors. Rodriguez is in Triple-A Indianapolis and Davis is in Double-A Altoona. Both had caught 18 games heading into yesterday’s action and both played as a designated hitter yesterday. Davis was 1-for-4 for Altoona and Rodriguez was 0-for-2. Cherington said that at the start of the season, the Pirates did not have a set number of games played at catcher for either of them, but he was “pretty sure it would have been more than 18”.
Cherington also said Vince Velasquez is expected to make a rehab start for Indianapolis this week before returning from his elbow injury, and he said the Pirates would love to have Mitch Keller be with the team for a long time, but he had “no news to share” on a contract extension.
The Pirates are off today before starting a two-game series in Detroit tomorrow night.
MLB
Colorado pitcher Ryan Feltner was released from a Denver hospital yesterday after getting hit in the head by a 92.7 mile-per-hour line Saturday night against the Phillies. Feltner suffered a skull fracture and a concussion but did not need surgery. He’s on the 15-day injured list.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona lost to Akron, 4-2 in their series finale with the Rubberducks. The Curve managed only four hits, one of them a Mason Martin home run.
The Curve will start a six-game series at Bowie tomorrow.
