Twenty-three games into the season, the Pirates are in first place in the National League Central, leading Milwaukee by half a game after Sunday’s win over the Reds. Joe Block recaps Sunday’s win.
Drew Maggi did not get into the game on Sunday, but he did suit up after being recalled from Altoona. Maggi has toiled in the minor leagues for 13 seasons and never played in a Major League game. He was recalled by the Twins in 2021 and dressed for two games but never got to play in a game. The Pirates called him up to replace Bryan Reynolds who was placed on the bereavement list on Saturday.
The Pirates drafted Maggi in the 15th round in 2010. Since that time, the former Arizona State outfielder has played for six organizations. He can play all four infield positions and all three outfield positions. To make room for him on the Major League roster, the Pirates transferred Jim Man Choi to the 60-day injured list. Reynolds can return from the bereavement list after three games.
The 7th straight win for the Pirates came on their 17th game in 17 days. They will finally get a rest today before welcoming the Dodgers to PNC Park tomorrow night. The Dodgers are 12-11 and will be the first team with a winning record that the Pirates will play this season.
