The Pirates completed an impressive road trip with another win over Colorado yesterday afternoon, with more quality starting pitching and offensive fireworks. Joe Block recaps the win.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Bucs’ got the offense rolling in Denver, and it was more than just the bats.
Shelton liked the focus of Johan Oviedo, who had to wait out some extra time in the dugout because the Pirates’ offense was banging.
Shelton says the Pirates’ rotation, which has strung together nine straight quality starts, is rolling right now.
As good as the Pirates feel about the road trip, there is concern about depth, which is being tested with a number of injuries. The Pirates updated the conditions on a number of injured players yesterday. First baseman Ji Man Choi is out until at least June with his Achilles injury. It will be eight weeks before he can resume baseball activities.
Shortstop Oneil Cruz will remain in his post-op dressing for another week before having the staples removed from his surgically-repaired left ankle.
Pitcher Chase De Jong threw a bullpen session this week and will throw live batting practice sometime this weekend. He has a back injury.
Pitcher Rob Zastryzny has ulnar neuritis in his pitching elbow and will not throw a baseball for seven to 10 days.
ALTOONA CURVE
Bowie belted two home runs in the first inning off Justin Meis and routed Altoona, 9-3 yesterday. Dylan Shockley collected two hits for the Curve.
Perhaps the most talked-about Pirates pitching prospect, fireballer Jared Jones, takes the mound tonight for game three of the series.
