The Penguins’ season came to an end last night with a typical Penguins performance against a last place team – inconsistent and puzzling. Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Penguins goals were scored by Kris Letang and Jake Guentzel, fitting for Guentzel in that he led the Penguins in goals with 36.
Coach Mike Sullivan says the Penguins were plagued this season by the same problem they had last night: not being able to play 60 minutes of good hockey.
Sullivan says he has a locker room full of proud hockey players who can play the game.
The coach says the Penguins players will take the disappointment of the lost season to heart and come back strong in the fall.
Penguins captain Sidney Crosby played all 82 games of the season for only the second time in his career and led the team in scoring with 33 goals and 93 points. He says the team as a whole will be determined to not repeat their performance next season.
Some high profile players will be unrestricted free agents in the offseason and the Penguins will probably have to make some front office decisions quickly in order to address their personnel issues. That could mean the departures of general manager Ron Hextall and president of hockey operations Brian Burke.
Pending unrestricted free agents include Tristan Jarry, Jason Zucker, Brian Dumoulin, Nick Bonino, Josh Archibald, Danton Heinen, and Dmitry Kulikov.
