After being shut out by Houston on Wednesday, the Pirates traveled to St. Louis to start a four-game series against the Cardinals, who have had their number in recent years. But the Bucs’ bats awakened and they came away with a shutout win of their own. Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Pirates were not intimidated by the St. Louis mystique.
Shelton says Vince Velasquez was masterful in earning his first win as a Pirate.
Shelton says the Pirates were patient against a very good pitcher in the Cards’ Jordan Montgomery.
Ji Hwan Bae was sparkling in centerfield, and Shelton says that versatility is a valuable asset to the Bucs, as Bae is primarily an infielder.
ALTOONA CURVE
Altoona’s bullpen could not hold a 6-4 lead in the 9th inning, or a 10-6 lead in the 10th, and the Curve lost to Erie, 13-10. Liover Peguero’s throwing error in the 10th, followed by a bobbled grounder by Mason martin that led to a bad exchange with pitcher Juan Minaya covering the bag led to three unearned runs to give the Sea Wolves the win. Peguero left the game injured after his bad throw. Lolo Sanchez had three hits for the Curve and Peguero had two.
Game four of the series is tonight, with the Curve sending right-hander Jared Jones to the mound. He’s 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA after one start.
