Coach Mike Sullivan’s postgame media appearance lasted all of a minute, five seconds, and that was more than enough to sum up the loss to Detroit, as the Penguins got off to a flat-footed start in a very busy, key week. Paul Steigerwald has the story.
Sullivan says the effort was just not good enough.
Casey DeSmith had a bad night in goal, stopping only 17 of 24 shots. He says the Pens have to put the game behind them and move on.
Defenseman Jan Rutta missed his sixth straight game but fellow blue-liner Jeff Petry returned to the lineup, for what it was worth. With Petry back, defenseman Taylor Fedun was returned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
The Penguins top two lines were a combined minus-9 on the night and third-line forward Rickard Rakell was a minus-3.
The Penguins host the Nashville Predators tomorrow night and then welcome the Bruins and the Flyers to PPG Paints Arena on Saturday and Sunday. All of the teams chasing the Penguins for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot were idle last night.
