The Pitt Panthers bowed out of the NCAA tournament yesterday with an 84-73 loss to Midwest Regional third seed Xavier. Pitt suffered from cold shooting for most of the game and was defenseless in the first half, giving up 48 points to the Musketeers.
Blake Hinson led Pitt with 18 points and Jamarius Burton had 16. The Panthers finish the season 24-12. Coach Jeff Capel was grateful to his overachieving Panthers for a season’s worth of thrills.
Elsewhere in an action-packed Sunday that settled the Sweet Sixteen in the NCAA, Michigan State and Creighton each advanced with upset wins over higher seeds Marquette and Baylor, respectively. Florida Atlantic ended the dream run of 16th seed Fairleigh Dickinson, while Gonzaga edged TCU, Kansas State knocked off Kentucky, Miami handled Indiana, and UConn roughed up Saint Mary’s.
The Sweet Sixteen starts with four games scheduled on Thursday and four more on Friday.
