The Pirates’ Vince Velasquez got hit hard yesterday as the Baltimore Orioles bombed the Bucs, 8-0 in spring training baseball. Velasquez gave up seven runs on seven hits, including a pair of two-run home runs as he lasted only into the fifth inning. He also walked four batters.
The Pirates optioned outfielder Cal Mitchell to Indianapolis yesterday and also sent infielder Nick Gonzalez to minor league camp. That leaves them with 48 players in big league camp, 24 of whom are pitchers.
The Bucs send Luis Ortiz to the mound against the Red Sox in Fort Myers this afternoon. It’s on WCCS starting at one o’clock.

The United States clinched a spot in the World Baseball Classic Final with a 14-2 clubbing of Cuba in Miami last night. Paul Goldschmidt bashed a two-run homer in the first inning and red-hot Trea Turner homered twice, a night after hitting a grand slam against Venezuela. Adam Wainwright earned the win on the mound, allowing one earned run in four innings. The USA will face the winner of tonight’s semifinal matchup between Japan and Mexico.
