Playing without three top defensemen, the Penguins were skated out of the building on Saturday night, falling to the New York Rangers 6-0 at Madison Square Garden.
With Jeff Petry, Jan Rutta, and Dmitry Kulikov all missing from the lineup due to injuries, the Pens called up Mark Friedman from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and dressed Chad Ruhwedel, and things got even worse early in the third period when defenseman Marcus Pettersson left the game with an undisclosed injury.
Goaltender Tristan Jarry was pulled from the game, his fourth early exit in his last 11 games, after stopping only 13 of 17 shots.
It won’t get any easier for the Penguins. They play four games in the next six days, starting tomorrow night at home against Ottawa. Then comes a trip to high-powered Colorado on Wednesday and to Dallas on Thursday before they return home to face the Capitals on Saturday.
