The Pirates went to Tampa Bay last night and the Yankees shut them down, but only for the first five innings. The Bucs then broke out the bats in a wild spring training outing. Joe Block reports.

First baseman Carlos Santana left the game in the third inning last night after he dropped a short popup and slipped and fell on the infield grass. He did throw on to first to get the out, but then he had to be helped off the field with an apparent knee injury.
The Bucs also announced that left-hander Jarlin Garcia has a nerve injury in his mid-humerus biceps region on his throwing arm. He is still unable to grip a baseball and is out long term. Garcia is scheduled for imaging and diagnostic tests in four to five weeks.
The Pirates are back at Bradenton this afternoon to take on the Tampa Bay Rays. Osvaldo Bido will start for the Bucs.

Shohei Ohtani struck out five to earn the win and he also scored twice as Japan ended pool play in the World Baseball Classic with a 9-3 win over Italy. Quarterfinal play begins today. The U.S> plays Venezuela tomorrow. Mets closer Edwin Diaz is out for the season after undergoing surgery for a torn patellar tendon suffered while celebrating Puerto Rico’s win over the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.
