The journey continues tonight for Indiana County’s two remaining teams in the PIAA basketball playoffs.
The action tips off on WCCS, when the District 6 champion Homer-Center girls clash with the number two team out of District 1, Sacred Heart Academy in a Class AA quarterfinal at Mifflin County High School in Lewistown.
Homer-Center carries a 22-7 record and a perfect 5-0 playoff record into the game. The Wildcats have been dominant defensively in the state tournament, stifling both Chartiers Houston and Millersburg, who they sent home Tuesday with a 59-29 all-out blitz. Sacred Heart cruised over Penn Treaty in round one and then survived a tough game with Line Mountain, 42-40, on Tuesday. The Lions have not played as much basketball as other teams. They are 15-9 coming into tonight’s game.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 o’clock. We have it on WCCS and WCCSradio.com at 5:40.
In girls Class AAA, 27-2 District 6 champ River Valley collides with WPIAL number 3 finisher Shady Side Academy, which is 25-3. River Valley’s two losses have been by a combined two points, and the Panthers have had a rugged trip in the state playoffs, fighting off challenges by York Catholic in round one, and by Laurel, which the Panthers beat, 56-54, on Tuesday on an Abby Pynos bucket in the closing seconds. Shady Side Academy easily handled Karns City and Mercyhurst Prep in the first two rounds.
The game is the second game of a doubleheader at Armstrong High School, with tipoff scheduled at around 7:30. It’s on Cat Country 106.3 FM and catcountry1063fm.com, with airtime at 7:15.
CONGRATULATIONS!
