The Pitt Panthers had several chances to put the game away against Georgia Tech yesterday, but it took until the very last minute for them to do so, coming away with an 89-81 win in the second round of the ACC Championship Tournament.
Five Panthers were in double figures. Jamarius Burton scored 21 points, Federiko Federiko had 19, Greg Elliott 16 (shooting 4-for-4 on three-pointers), Blake Hinson scored 12 and Nelly Cummings 11 as Pitt earned its 22nd win and played its way into the third round. They’ll play Duke at 2:30 this afternoon. Duke beat Pitt 77-69 in January after the Panthers led by 11 points at halftime.
Coach Jeff Capel says the Blue Devils are good and getting better.
Capel is impressed with his team, which was cobbled together with transfers and freshmen in a turbulent offseason.
All-ACC guard Jamarius Burton says the Panthers are a better team now than they were the first time they played the Blue Devils.
Pitt is 22-10 going into today’s game and Duke is 23-8. You’ll hear the action with Bill Hillgrove and Curtis Aiken beginning with the pregame from Greensboro Coliseum in North Carolina at 2:00.
NCAA
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is stepping down after 47 years with the Orange. His teams made 35 NCAA Tournaments, five Final Fours, and won the 2003 National Championship. The often–controversial Boeheim won over 1,000 games at the Division One level, placing him second all-time to Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski. Former Syracuse point guard and current assistant Adrian Autry takes over the job. Syracuse was 17-15 this season under Boeheim and lost to Wake Forest in the ACC tournament yesterday, 77-74.
