The Orioles’ Austin Hays clubbed a three-run home run in the fourth inning and Ryan Mountcastle followed that up with a grand slam in the fifth as Baltimore beat the Pirates, 7-4, yesterday.
The Bucs’ starter, Vince Velasquez, threw three solid shutout innings, striking out three, walking none and giving up one hit. Velasquez, who signed with the Bucs in December after going 3-3 with a 4.78 ERA last year for the White Sox, says his game is coming on.
The game featured an embarrassing moment for the Bucs’ Travis Swaggerty, who thought Canaan Smith-Njigba’s home run ball had been caught, so he stopped running. Smith- Njigba passed Swaggerty on the base paths and was immediately ruled out and credited only with a two-run single.
The Pirates say left-hander Jarlin Garcia will not throw for several weeks after experiencing tightness in his forearm. Director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk says Garcia is currently unable to grip a baseball but tests on his elbow and shoulder came back clean.
The Pirates yesterday acquired utility man Mark Mathias from the Texas Rangers for a player to be named later. They assigned pitcher Max Kranick to the 60-day injured list to make room on the roster for Mathias, who hit .247 with six home runs and three stolen bases last season in thirty games with the brewers and Rangers.
