The Pirates beat the Orioles yesterday, 7-4 for their first win of the Grapefruit League season.
Nick Gonzales and Jason Delay each homered for the Bucs in a game in which all of the runs and all of the hits were produced by guys who are either minor leaguers or veterans in camp on minor league deals with major league invitations.
Major Leaguers Luis Ortiz, David Bednar, and Jarlin Garcia each threw scoreless baseball through the first four innings.
The Pirates announced that the first pitch for the home opener will be thrown out by former star pitcher AJ Burnett, and his battery mate that night will be Russell Martin, as the team celebrates the ten-year anniversary of their 94-win team of 2013, on which Burnett and Martin were key team leaders. The most memorable moment of that season, of course, was Martin’s home run off Johnny Cueto in the Wild Card playoff game against the Reds.
The Pirates play the Tigers in Lakeland, Florida this afternoon.
