The NHL trade deadline is Friday and all of a sudden the Penguins seem to have awakened in the Eastern Conference playoff chase. Over the weekend, the Pens won back-to-back games on consecutive days, besting the Blues on Saturday and the Lightning last night. Paul Steigerwald has the recap.
After Drew O’Connor’s first period goal and two subsequent scores by Tampa Bay, the Pens’ six goals in the second period outburst were scored by Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Teddy Blueger, Jeff Carter, Jason Zucker, and Brian Dumoulin.
With the win, the Penguins have 67 points, good enough to hold on to the second wild card spot in the East. They are one point up on Buffalo, three up on the Capitals, Red Wings, and Panthers. The Pens are two down to the Islanders, who hold the first wild card.
The Penguins will play their next three games on the road, at Nashville tomorrow, at Tampa Bay on Thursday, and in Sunrise, Florida against the Panthers on Saturday.

The Sharks will also pay 50 percent of Meier’s salary.
