Homer-Center’s Justley Sharp yesterday won the indoor state championship in the shot put, with a winning toss of 44 feet, 6 inches. The title is extra impressive because indoor track operates without school classifications, which means she competed against all comers, regardless of school size. Sharp is the reigning state champion in the outdoor discus and will be one of the favorites this year in both shot put and discus. She will be attending Bucknell University in the fall on a full scholarship.
And congratulations today to River Valley’s Sara McConnell, who won the state indoor title in the high jump with a leap of five feet, six inches. She also set a new personal record with the jump.
At the same meet, Indiana’s Abby Huey finished third in the 200 meters and fifth in the 400. She established new school records with both runs (24.88 in the 200 and 56.83 in the 400).
The Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association indoor championships were held at Penn State.
