Pirates pitching coach Oscar Marin said yesterday that Mitch Keller will start for the Bucs in their exhibition opener tomorrow afternoon against Toronto.
Keller’s overall numbers were not outstanding last season, with a 5-13 record and a 3.91 ERA, but he led the Bucs in starts and innings and sported a 2.06 ERA in his final six starts, with a 3.09 ERA in the season’s second half.
The Bucs will play the Blue Jays in Bradenton tomorrow, have an off day Sunday, then host the Phillies on Monday in the first radio game of spring training on WCCS.
The Phillies’ Bryce Harper will make his way to the team’s spring training facility in Clearwater, Florida next month. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski gave a timetable of March 8th or 9th for Harper’s return after offseason elbow surgery. The seven-time All-Star hit .286 with 18 home runs in limited play in 99 games last season, plagued by major injuries to his elbow and thumb.
